The MOST EFFECTIVE and Organic Method to Kill Most Garden Pests

This is ESPECIALLY effective on grasshoppers and those little round bugs that like to crawl all over your greens. In fact, I believe it is the ONLY effective method that is so organic that you use no other substances (such as boric acid, which needs to reapplied every time it rains) other than YOUR BARE HANDS. With a little persistence and perserverance, this method is full-proof!

Now, if you don't want to get your hands dirty, you have no business doing organic farming in the first place! Second, if you are squeemish about killing one or more of God's creatures, get over it, because when you are growing veggies for your consumption in order to survive and/or thrive, it is EITHER THE GRASSHOPPER OR YOU! It is NOT as if grasshoppers are going to be endangered any time soon. Any way you slice it, you are going to have to deal with insect pests when you grow your own garden. Either put up with 'em in your organic gardening, or use pesticides and stop growing organic, or hire someone else to do that job knowing you are still killing insects. Believe me I get no joy out of killing grasshoppers, locusts, little round bugs, or any other garden pest. But it MUST be done if you want to eat your harvest!

First, hunker down near your target, quietly. Then, one hand above the target grasshopper and one below. Finally, either clap your hands smooshing the insect, or grab it with your best hand (righty, the right hand on top, and lefty, the left hand on top). With insect in hand, pull the head off. This works also with grasshopper/leaf hopper/ locust type insects. If you are dealing with those little round bugs, you can pick them up with your fingers, they don't bite. Either smoosh them or again tear their heads off. For aphids and other tiny bugs that eat the undersides of some leaves, buy some lady bugs or praying mantises from your garden shop or nursery. Or buy yourself some chickens...but watch out for your corn crop!

There is also something you can do to keep down the number of grasshoppers that get into your garden in the first place...cut down on the grass that surrounds your garden fencing! You need to cut your grass right outside the fence as closely to the fence as possible, and you need to get rid of any grass that comes up among your veggies, or grass that surrounds your garden inside the fence. A lawnmower and/or a "weed whacker" will do the trick. Growing garlic can also help if you intersperse the garlic plants around the garden.

There seem to be two types of people: those who seek gloom and doom and those who sense it will happen but would do almost anything they could feasibly do to prevent it from happening, at least in their surroundings. The first type of person sounds a lot like former Pennsylvania Congressman Rick Santorum, who believes that the 70% or so of Americans who disapprove of President Bush would sing another tune should another 9-11 come to America's shores. Then you have the Arkansas Republican Party Chariman, Dennis Milligan, basically saying the same thing. (For a summary of this, click here.) Finally, you have an ABC News blogger claiming "official sources" to back up this scare tactic, here. Then you have folks like Ron Paul, who is running for president, 2008, with a program to completely overhaul the rigged financial system that is going to bring down the US economy one way or another...at least for the possible eight years he would be President if the Republicans finally do the right thing for America and nominate him in 2008 (he would beat Hillary with both hands tied behind his back...heck, he has won the Texas 14th Congressional District every election since 1996 with virtually NO REPUBLICAN leadership support! He does it through popular support of the people in a mostly farming district between Galveston and Victoria. And this despite the fact that he refuses to get "pork" for his district! I firmly believe he can become our next President IF the oligarchs who hate him would stop rigging the game (fat chance, but miracles do happen!). And folks like me, who, instead of griping and complaining about the US economy are preparing for a meltdown THAT I DON'T WANT, and, hopefully, you who want an alternative to wasteful consumerism, lazy couch-potato-ism, and demoralized hopelessness that there is nothing anyone can do, will check out this site and Subscribe to the Something Happening Here Newsletter! Future letters will give you tips on how to survive and succeed on your rural-remote land and homestead.

So, which are you? Someone who wants the downfall of freedom and hope in the US for whatever reason and thinks fear is cool, or someone who can see bad times coming but has a plan to do something about it, is preparing, and wants to help others do the same?

Or are you someone who thinks all is lost and wants to leave the country? The webmaster of one of my favorite sites, Cryptogon, has given up on the US and moved to New Zealand. I have to say that if I had to move, New Zealand would be an excellent choice (for the landscape alone...everytime I think of New Zealand I think of "Lord of the Rings." Beautiful country!). But moving is NOT an option for me unless everyone in my family dies or kicks me out of it. (Besides, if I had to get out quick, I'm only 80 or so miles from Mexico.) And moving is NOT an option, yet anyway, for many Americans. that is why those who pretty much know what's coming need to do what I have done and "head for the hills, mountains, deserts and forests."
