Gardening: for the Birds? Plus: "Amazing Stories" |
May in far west Texas (and the American Southwest in general) can be a problematic time for making gardens grow--ESPECIALLY when "La Nina" is about, and, according to the Christian Science Monitor, "La Ninas" are going to be a consistent feature in the climate around here for the next few years. (Here is what "la Ninas" do to the weather in the Southwest: rains we normally get in the summer wind up being pushed northward. The rain we do get is usually from the high temps in the air forcing air to rise, meeting cooler air, bringing moisture over the mountains. So, while we do get some rain, we tend to get more lightning.) Just think, four years ago, far west Texas got NEARLY FIVE FEET of rain from May, 2004, until February, 2005! So, now you know it: El Ninos actaully bring lots of rain to Big Bend Country...BUT El Ninos followed by La Ninas bring draught. And this year--as of 1:15 pm, May 31, 2008, it is already 101 degrees up here in the mountains!--is going to be a doozy. Guys, if you are going to move to the American Southwest to build your homestead or survival place, you MUST make sure there is fresh water on your land! And you must make sure you can, by hook or by crook (okay, by hook!) afford to put a well on your land so you can have a decent supply of fresh water for you, your sanitation, and your garden and livestock. And you must make sure that every possible drop of rain can be collected. This year, where I live, those drops of rain and going to be hard to come by! |

Grasshoppers, aphids, and the rest of the pest horde aren't going to be your only garden problems in a year like this. Birds can be a problem, wet or dry, but when it is dry, for some reason (hey, I'm not a wildlife biologist! I call it the way I see it), birds have a tendency to try to grab as much juicy green leaf as they can. Of course, the reason for this is without rain, the grass stays brown and won't turn green. Birds like green, juicy grass instead of brown dry grass. (Folks, this isn't rocket science or any science. It's nature.) There is a solution, of course--put a wire "roof" over your garden (or better, build a greenhouse, which is always a good idea!). A good solution for short people. We had neighbors who did this. These neighbors were both just a shade over five feet tall. But what if your main gardener (my 6 foot 2 inch husband) is NOT short? Furthermore, not only do birds eat your greens, they also eat your pests. Do you really want to keep jays from eating grasshoppers? (I mean, you can't catch them all unless you want to stand out in the heat--101 degrees is hot, even in dry west Texas!--). So, I offer some solutions. One, move to a desert area with a lack of birds (and water, of course, but with no lack of grasshoppers!). Two, move to Oregon or Washington...oh yeah! June through August is their dry season! Three, move to the Northeast or North Central--if you can afford the prices for land, and by land I don't mean a house in a crashing housing market. Four, move to Alaska, and prepare for a three month growing season, and spending a fortune on fencing. Bears, you know. Five, plant what you can, then wait for the rains to come, which won't keep the birds and bugs away, but will facilitate plant growth...and the birds will find grass to chew so they won't mind leaving your gardens alone. And while you're waiting, do the best you can to keep your garden completely organic. |

And, speaking of waiting out the dry season... If you are physically in any kind of decent shape and live in a community with a volunteer fire department, join it. This is true even if you just want to be left alone, are constructing some kind of compound to "wait out the end times" or are hiding out from someone or something. If you are going to live in a community of (mostly) like minded individuals, you might as well contribute to the public good. It does your spirit (Christian or otherwise) good to keep your neighbor's house from burning down. Furthermore, knowledge of how fires work and what you can do to reduce the risk of fire on your own house (clue: the first thing you do if fire is near is to REMOVE gas cans, propane tanks, and other things that will turn a small, controllable house fire into an EXPLOSION!). If a fire is on your property (die to lightning, for instance), besides disconnecting your gas sources, you can also get out your water hose and wet down your outside walls and nearby grass and trees. another thing you can do is get some great training in fire fighting at the Texas A & M Fire Fighting School on the main campus at College Station. (I'm an "Aggie Mom" and so I must plug the school regardless...and it might be the best fire school in the US. It offers fire training for structural fires, grass fires, high angle fires and rescues, offshore fires, HAZMAT training, anti-terrorism, etc.). If you are not physically able, you can still help out by making food for the fire fighters, bake sales, etc. |

And now for some amazing articles I have read over the past week... |
Last week, I posted a link to an article that said some Washington "Insider" claimed that President Bush was behind 9-11. There are all sorts of folks, from Alex Jones to a high up mucky-muck in the Japanese Diet, who make similar claims. Now a US Military Intelligence Analyst speaks out, as well as former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, in an interview with a highly sceptical Howard Stern (Stern, of course, couldn't agree with Ventura even if he wanted to, because then he would lose his very lucrative job). But then, my reading only got better (or worse, depending on your point of view). Back when we were on the fringe of the "patriot/militia" movement we used to read faxes sent out by the "American Patriot Fax Network" at our local land center, which had a fax machine...this was before we got onto the Internet. Well, from a link at another site was this link to this APFN blog post which claims that the Marines are prepared for martial law (and the fact that the
"Marine" trainer appears to have a hard-on for this sorta thing), or is it just psy-ops? When I had my old web zine, I used to report this sorta thing all the time. Supposedly there are well over 100 "concentration camps" already set up in this country, with guillotines and all. This might be BS, but it is an interesting read. As usual, reader, I'm going to leave it up to you to decide whether these stories I post are true or not. But I post these links because you must HOPE FOR THE BEST AND PREPARE FOR THE WORST! And there is this from the same site, about organization, and Fed infilltration. Then there is this Four Winds piece, sent to that site via a very reliable source, Bob Chapman of the International Forecaster, about how Halliburton has scammed the Pentagon AND the CIA! (and you can ready summaries of this here. Finally, if these links don't pique your "conspiratorial side," I offer the following: the United States really is bankrupt, the Consitution is no longer in effect (and we the people are "the enemy"), our "money" is just credit, and, of course, our enemy is THEM, not Arabs, not Jews, not Islam, not Chinese Communists, not Hugo Chavez, not Persians, not "terrorists", not blacks, not whites, not Hispanics, not Asians, not Native Americans, not the poor or the rich. Unless the rich are named Rothschild, or Rockefeller, or any other of the so-called "Illuminati" families and their government lackeys. If nothing else, read "Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars," and GET PREPARED! |

Finally, since this is summer (well, almost) and I am going to be very busy, not the least because I have totally neglected my Christian blog and am doing Bible research for further study of Christian Zionism and its relationship to "Mystery Babylon, Mother of Harlots," and fuming over stories about Christian persecution inside Israel (and, since it is happening there IT WILL HAPPEN HERE thanks to ADL, the ACLU, AIPAC, the American Jewish Committee and other Talmudic-Zionist fronts), I will only be posting twice a month from now through August. I intend to be on the front lines of this issue of apostasy that justifies itself with the name of God. I've been called to this and I can't help it. Someone has to stand up for Jesus! |
